MOMO's Got the Mo-Moves
South Korea-based Japanese superstar Momo is going to be everywhere this year — her group TWICE releases a new mini-album, Ready to Be, this month, and the band’s sub-unit, MISAMO, which Momo is also a part of, is set to be huge
We’re just in the first quarter of 2023, and a certain K-pop girl group is getting an early start at making, well, twice the impact of their contemporaries — not only is iconic girl group TWICE releasing their 12th mini-album this month, the group’s first subunit (consisting of TWICE’s three Japanese members), MISAMO has teased that they are soon releasing their first Japanese mini album. Today, we see a different side to the band’s main dancer, Momo, who embraces her grown-up and feminine sides — she joins us in the studio with her dear fur kid, Boo, and the Norwich Terrier even gets his own photograph taken with the Twice superstar. Below, Momo talks about TWICE’s upcoming mini album, her excitement about being part of MISAMO, and more.
TWICE is releasing your 12th mini-album this month. What can we expect?
Since this is our first album after our contract renewal, we’re excited to show you all a renewed TWICE with a new beginning!
Earlier this year, you released your prerelease single, ‘Moonlight Sunrise’, of the 12th mini-album. What was it like working on the track and video?
Since it was an English pre-release single, I worked hard and put in a lot of effort to overcome the challenges of pronouncing English by practising and recording many times. As for the music video, I felt like we had a really refreshing vibe and atmosphere, and so all of the members had a blast filming it.
You were also involved in the OST 'Bouquet', with Mina and Sana. How was it forming Twice's first ever sub-unit, MISAMO?
At first, when we decided to form MISAMO, I felt there was both a lot of excitement and anxiety. But at the end of the day, we’re really excited to showcase a new side of us three to the fans! We’re really excited to see the reactions from our fans.
As an iconic girl group, have TWICE’s sound and style been updated for the recent and upcoming 2023 music releases?
I definitely think we’ve matured both musically and conceptually since our early days on the music scene. At the same time, I believe we are continuing to show our own unique colours while maintaining our bright and energetic vibes!
We previously photographed and interviewed Mina and Tzuyu for the magazine — though that was before the TWICE members launched individual Instagram accounts. After nine months, you now have over 10 million followers. Has it been fun documenting your journey with your personal social media account?
I’ve always loved taking photos, and the members and our managers have always taken really good photos. Because of those reasons, I think I’ve posted a lot on Instagram since the beginning! Our fans have responded quite positively, and my account is loved by so many people, so I’m very grateful, surprised, and happy!
March is the start of a new fashion season. What are some of your favourite style items of 2023 so far?
Recently, the weather has gotten pretty cold so I enjoy wearing a couple of the winter slippers that I got for both casual and the more aesthetic outfits. When it gets a bit chilly at home, I’ve been wearing this gown that I got from M&M with the members during our US tour. The quality of gown is good as well, so I’ve been wearing it a lot recently.
What can we expect from you next?
In a way, this is a new beginning for TWICE since we renewed our contracts this year, so our fans can expect to see a lot of us and we hope to meet many fans as well. Similarly, we hope the fans can enjoy what’s coming next from MISAMO. And last but not least, the fans can look forward to seeing a lot from me when I embark on my solo activities as well!
