The 1950s were a significant decade for the house of Dior, as those were the years that saw the maturation and refinement of Christian Dior’s revolutionary New Look. So perhaps it was only natural that Maria Grazia Chiuri should look to the French house’s roots for Fall/Winter 2019, which she did with much aplomb. The collection references classic New Look silhouettes like the bar suit, as well as other cultural phenomena of those years, such as the Teddy Girls and Princess Margaret. Even the accessories are given a retro makeover, as is evident in the winged-out CatStyleDior sunglasses.

Cat eye glasses first became popular in – you guessed it – the 1950s, with the help of Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor, who donned the shape both on screen and in real life. The feline frame has never really gone out of style in the decades since, and understandably so, as it’s flattering to every face shape.

Combining the boldness and elegance that epitomised ‘50s fashion with contemporary chic, the new cat eyes from Dior certainly up the style ante. The CatStyleDior sunglasses feature lightweight rectangular or butterfly-shaped frames in nude and black colourways, stamped with the ‘CD’ logo at the temples. There’s also a glamorous couture version that comes embellished with more than a thousand Swarovski crystals, or in hematite and Aurore Boréale, a one-of-a-kind crystal developed in collaboration with the couturier in 1956.
