For the Cruise 2023 collection showcase, Chanel headed to the azure beaches of Monte Carlo to bring a story of sporty summer wear that fuses nostalgia with modernity. With a trailer directed by Sofia and Roman Coppola, the cruise show pulled inspiration from late ‘60s leisure, speed racing sports, and memories of Karl Lagerfeld.

Chanel Creative Director Virginie Viard carefully selected the location in the Côte d’Azur for its connections to the late Lagerfeld and beautiful landscape of floral, fauna, and the sea. “From very early on, I knew we would hold a show there, and more precisely at the Beach Hotel. Besides, Karl was dreaming about it. From this magnificent venue, one can glimpse his villa, La Vigie. I will never forget the times I spent there: terraces and balconies, big umbrellas, baskets of flowers - so much beauty,” says Viard.

Chanel’s collection was lively, flouncy, and offered a variety of styles to complement Monaco’s coastal lifestyle. Sleek coveralls, motocross prints, floral sequins, hot pink tweed, lacy sets, and silk suits demonstrated the various aspects of Chanel’s exuberant inspiration—and of course, the tennis racket bags, bold pendant jewellery, mini purses, and motorcycle helmets added to the fun. The pieces were also styled with black strappy satin shoes, a direct reference to the legacy of the Monte Carlo Ballet.

Though the looks were born out of the myriad inspiration held in Monte Carlo, the cruise wear can translate to any summery location. Opt for Chanel’s terry cloth jumpsuit by day and the deep blue sequin gown by night to suit all vacation activities and new memories. Motorsport license not required.
