Back to the Past: The Influence of the Old West on the 2022 Runways
Old Hollywood was not just the glitz and glamour of red carpet gowns; Old Western films that were popularised in the '50s and '60s gave rise to a rather iconic, American aesthetic that seems to be making a comeback in fashion.
Trends come and go but a select few have stood the test of time. Amidst the '90s and Y2k era fashion trends making a fierce comeback, another one from a slightly more distant past has been revealing itself at various runway shows for 2022: Western Americana. Often characterised by workwear, it revolves around elements associated with the American West. Think Cowboy gear, earthy, desert hues, fringe, rivets and leather.
Hermès
Accessories at the Hermès Spring/Summer 2022 show included two statement necklaces. One featuring silver, asymmetric dangle details that mirrored the fringe detailing on buckskin jackets and the other, a tanned horseshoe-inspired leather design with a contemporary, palladium metal finish. The horseshoe-inspired motif also made an appearance on a variety of cuff bracelets, featuring a crisp, contemporary white, alongside a more traditional western-feel tan hue. Other western-esque accessories came in the form of a sandy-beige lasso-inspired rope belt and a madame calfskin saddle blet. Dressed in a rich, darkened tan, the saddle belt also featured a canvas rope motif on its band.
Fendi
Two looks from Fendi's Spring 2022 Ready-to-Wear show incorporated slivers of a cowhide print in ochre, cool-toned sand brown and richer chocolate. Invoking imagery of being on a ranch, the motif, which included a star, felt like a subtle nod to the lone star state. Thigh-high boots emulated the feel of classic cowboy boots but elevated to suit the whimsy and glamour of high fashion.
At Fendi's Fall Ready-to-Wear show at Milan Fashion Week, the Western motif appeared once again in the form of a unique rendition of the baguette bag that emulated a saddlebag. The elongated horseshoe type shape graced the trendy '90s baguette that has become extremely popular with the return of the '90s/Y2k era trends. The design was infused with a unique interlocking chain handle that added a touch of chic, retro-contemporary glamour to the Old-West meets early '00s accessory.
Gucci
Cowboy hats, pointed boots and saddlebags featured heavily in Gucci's Pre-Fall 2022 collection. These accessories were teamed with chic, modern silhouettes like a sultry, plunge neck black dress with ruffle sleeves and a black and red two-piece ensemble that comprised of a trendy, cropped jacket and maxi skirt. The pointed collar of the jacket hinted at western shirts while the tiered maxi skirt was reminiscent of prairie dresses. Another unique pairing showcased these accessories with lace-trimmed, bohemian dresses, creating a desert-boho-chic aesthetic that evoked the mystic romanticism of the Southwest.
The spirit of the Old West was once again presented in Gucci's Fall Ready-to-Wear show at Milan Fashion Week. Western collared jackets featured alongside the cowhide motif that appeared on fur collars while thick, statement belts and the saddlebag featured in black leather embellished with glistening silver rivets, reminiscent of western concho belts.
