Alexander McQueen Debuts the Slash and Hobo Bags for Pre-Spring Summer 2023
Technology faces humanity head-on in the Slash bag campaign film starring Kaia Gerber
In Sarah Burton’s Pre-Spring Summer 2023 collection for Alexander McQueen, the Creative Director found refuge and tension at the crossroads between nature and technology. The convergence of these two subjects was visited in the house’s accessories for the season too, including two new handbags: The Slash and the Hobo.
The Slash bag from this collection presents a cut detail reminiscent of one of McQueen’s signature styles in tailoring – the sliced and slashed look. In a campaign film featuring Kaia Gerber, the padded leather handbag follows Gerber’s journey as she traverses a futuristic world of science, surveillance and humanity. The sharp lines of the bag evoke a sense of cutting-edge innovation that is uniquely McQueen, as displayed through the Slash’s shape, and the signature Knuckle hardware iconic of the house, in silver metal.
The Knuckle closure is a classic emblem of the house of McQueen; the knuckleduster look of the Knuckle marries the rough urban toughness with the refinement of jewellery. The juxtaposition of the skull motif and the surrounding flora and fauna is a skilful representation of McQueen’s penchant for the paradoxical.
The Knuckle also finds itself perched on the Hobo bag from the Pre-Spring Summer collection. With its shape inspired by the faceted stone that sits on the Knuckle, the Jewelled Hobo bag is an icon of its own. Structured and chic, the Hobo features the signature skull motif, so central to McQueen as a powerhouse of London street culture. The versatile bag comes in Small and Mini sizes, and can be hand-held, worn on the shoulder or cross-body via the chain shoulder strap.
