Zaya Wade Makes Red Carpet Debut Since Coming Out As Transgender
Dwyane Wade, wife Gabrielle Union and daughter Zaya Wade attended the Better Brothers Los Angeles 6th annual Truth Awards Saturday night, which marks the 12-year-old’s first ever red carpet event since she revealed in February as a transgender girl.
Just the past month, basketball star Dwyane Wade revealed in an interview with Ellen Degeneres that his child -- formerly known as Zion -- would now like to be called Zaya going forward, with the pronouns she/her. The family, together with stepmom actress Gabrielle Union, have lovingly embraced her, and now it’s time for the world to meet her.
Zaya walked the 6th annual Truth Awards, an event that was specifically “created to recognise and highlight the accomplishments of the black LGBT+ community and its allies,” Dwyane said on his instagram. The family stepped out in coordinated custom color blocked Richfresh suits, and Zaya accessorised her smart look with a silver chain and a small fuschia bag.
In an endearingly proud-dad moment, Dwyane shared on his instagram her photo, with caption, “"Everyone allow her to re-introduce herself, her name is Zaya Wade! Last night was Zaya's first red carpet and we couldn't have been prouder of how she handled the questions that were asked of her. She has emerged as one of the young faces and voices for the LGBTQ+ community. #truthawards"
Similarly, Gabrielle Union took to instagram to express how moved she was for the event and for Zaya. She said, ‘It was an EPIC night filled with so much love & a real sense of community. It was important for Zaya to be a part of such a beautiful night & reminding her of all the love & support she has. We were moved to tears so many times throughout the night. So much gratitude ❤💜🖤’
At a tender age of 12, Zaya’s already slaying and thriving with the support from her parents. Dwyane told Ellen DeGeneres last month, “It’s what every parent should be -- loving and supporting your child, whoever they are.”
We are excited to see the amazing young woman she will grow up to be!
