'Wicked' Brings the Magic of Oz to the Big Screen
The highly anticipated film adaptation brings the iconic story and musical to life for a new generation, hitting theaters this month.
After years of anticipation, Wicked is finally making its way to a theater near you, bringing the magical world of Oz to life in a whole new way. This film adaptation promises to immerse audiences in the unforgettable story and music that have captured hearts around the world.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the visionary behind the acclaimed ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘In the Heights,’ this adaptation marks a major leap in his career, taking on a musical that’s been loved by many since its inception over 20 years ago. Chu’s previous films showcased his incredible storytelling and large-scale productions, making him the perfect fit to bring Wicked’s world of wonder, intrigue, and music to life on the big screen.
The star-studded cast is led by Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo — with her powerful voice and commanding presence, she takes on the role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Grammy-winning Ariana Grande plays Glinda, bringing her signature vocal range and comedic chops to Shiz University's most "popular" student. Jonathan Bailey plays Fiyero, offering a fresh take on the beloved character. Adding to the film’s star power are Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked uncovers the untold story of the witches of Oz, exploring the unexpected friendship between Elphaba and Glinda. Fans can look forward to iconic Broadway songs like ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘Popular,’ brought to life with Chu’s careful direction, stunning practical sets, and an emphasis on live vocals that stay true to the musical’s roots.
The first part of this two-part film adaptation is now available in theaters across Singapore.
