'The Supermodels' Documentary Will Spotlight The Runway Icons Of '90s Fashion
The original supermodels, fashion icons, social media personalities, and now, TV stars too — Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington are set to headline a new documentary series that will premiere on Apple TV+.
"My sisters Christy, Linda, Cindy, and I are extremely thrilled to share our story with the world,” Campbell wrote on Instagram earlier this week. All four women will help executive produce the project, which is simply and fittingly titled The Supermodels, with each providing exclusive interviews and insights into their meteoric rise to fame in the industry.
“I’m excited to reunite with my friends to both celebrate and examine the way supermodels transcended the traditional perceptions and limits of modeling in the fashion industry through time,” Crawford said in her own post. "We plan to explore the dynamic personalities, and shifts in media and culture that helped shape and define this iconic era."
The series will be directed by Academy Award-winning Barbara Kopple, who is renowned for her films on mining labour in rural communities in America. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Documentaries, an arm of their production company Imagine Entertainment, will produce the series under an exclusive first-look deal with Apple TV. Imagine Documentaries has often explored ideas of celebrity and fame in film, such as this year's feature on basketball star Dwyane Wade.
The Supermodels, however, will not be a celebrity portrait film. “I would love for people to see this as a celebration of not only our individual stories, but also to the power of friendship, dreams and perseverance,” said Evangelista.
The series will begin in the ‘80s, when Campbell, Crawford, Evangelista and Turlington first found success. It will then explore their collective stardom in the ’90s, and how the four friends disrupted the global fashion scene and shaped our notions of supermodels today. While details are still scant, you can be sure The Supermodels will be a fashion feast of epic proportions.
