And just like that, history has been made! O Yeong-su (‘Squid Game’) won Best Supporting Actor at the 79th Golden Globes earlier today, making him the first Korean actor to ever win a Golden Globe.

Best known for this role as Oh Il-nam (otherwise known as Player 001 or The Host), the 77-year-old actor beat Billy Crudup (‘The Morning Show’), Kieran Culkin (‘Succession’), Mark Duplass (‘The Morning Show’), and Brett Goldstein (‘Ted Lasso’) to clinch the award at the private event held earlier today in Los Angeles.

In an interview with Soompi in October last year, the actor shared how he’s been coping with the uprise of his fame. “So many people have been contacting me (since the release of ‘Squid Game’) and because I don’t have a manager to help me, it’s hard for me to handle the volume of calls and messages I’ve been receiving. So my daughter has been helping me.”

“Things have changed quite a bit. Even when I go out to a cafe or somewhere like that, I now have to be aware of (how I appear to others). It’s made me think, ‘Being famous is tough, too.'”

‘Squid Game’ earned its reputation as one of 2021’s cult-favourite shows with its compelling story arc, dark themes, and endless plot twists. Its premise surrounded a contest where innocent children’s games turned deadly when the fight for survival and money came into play. Since then, the show has become the most-watched series in 94 countries in Netflix history. The show, along with its lead actor, Lee Jung-Jae, were also nominated for Golden Globes this year.
