IU and Park Bo-gum to Star in a New K-Drama 'When Life Gives You Tangerines'
The upcoming K-drama set to premiere on Netflix follows two Jeju Island natives as they navigate life and love.
K-drama fans, gear up – IU and Park Bo-gum are set to act in a new drama series titled When Life Gives You Tangerines (working title). The upcoming series will be set on Jeju Island in South Korea, and sees IU and Park Bo-gum as Ae-sun and Gwan-sik respectively, two Jeju Island natives in the 1950s. When Life Gives You Tangerines in the Jeju dialect translates to ‘You Have Done Well’
Set to premiere on Netflix, The story of When Life Gives You Tangerines follows IU’s character Ae-sun, a rebellious and bold character, juxtaposed with Park Bo-gum’s quiet, reliable Gwan-sik, and their blossoming romance. The K-drama is written by Lim Sang-chun, who wrote Fight for My Way starring Park Seo-joon and Kim Ji-won. The director for the series is Kim Won-seok, who previously directed the slice-of-life series Mi-saeng (Incomplete Life) and the 2016 fantasy drama Signal.
IU will be reuniting with Kim Won-seok on this project, having both worked together in 2018 on My Mister, a unique story of love and kinship. IU, who made her debut at age 15 as a singer, ventured into acting through supporting roles but found her footing with My Mister, earning her the Best Actress in Television award at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards. IU has since acted in various dramas and films such as Hotel Del Luna, Broker and Dream.
Park Bo-gum is no new face in the Korean acting scene either. Having made his acting debut in 2011 in a supporting role, he rose to fame for his performance as a cello prodigy in Naeil’s Cantabile. His role in Reply 1988 as a genius Go player also earned him the title of ‘Nation’s Little Brother’ in Korea. He has since taken on many successful projects including Love in the Moonlight opposite Kim Yoo-jung, Record of Youth and Seo-bok.
