Netflix Sweeps the 2021 Golden Globe Nominations for The Crown, Emily In Paris, And More
Awards season has begun! Given how the pandemic has played out over the past year, almost every film in the running has been released online, or delayed and awaiting release. It perhaps may not come as much of a surprise, then, that streaming giant Netflix received a jaw-dropping 42 nominations at the recent Golden Globe Nominations, announced earlier on Wednesday, 3 February.
Netflix’s contenders include Emily in Paris for Best Televisions Series nominations between the drama and comedy/musical category, and for Lily Collin’s lead performance; The Crown, for six spots, and The Queen’s Gambit and its breakout star Anya Taylor-Joy (who also garnered a nod for her role in Emma).
Another first includes three women who were nominated for best director - Regina King, Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell. The Golden Globes had only previously nominated five women in its 77-year history. Nomadland director Zhao will make the first Asian woman to be nominated for a directing Golden Globe. King, who is up for her directorial debut film One Night in Miami, is also only the second Black woman to ever be nominated.
David Fincher’s Mank, garnered six nominations, including one for best drama, competing against The Trial of the Chicago 7, Nomadland, The Father and Fennell's Promising Young Woman.
The late actor Chadwick Boseman received a Best Actor in a Motion Picture nomination in the drama category for his role as Levee Green in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Boseman passed in August of last year after a four year battle with colon cancer. The film, which was released four months after his death, was dedicated to his memory.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are set to host the event, which will broadcast bi-coastally with Fey in New York, and Poehler in Los Angeles. The ceremony is scheduled for February 28 and will be shown on NBC.
