Monday night saw a star-studded premiere of Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles — featuring the likes of cast members Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiami, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, and Don Lee.

Directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, the film follows a team of immortal beings put on Earth to protect humanity for centuries. Critics are already calling it “spectacularly weird & rich with a new MCU mythology,” “the most ambitious Marvel movie ever made,” and full of "expected and unexpected twists.”

The premiere brought forth a rare public sighting of the Jolie-Pitt family. Thena actress Angelina Jolie walked the blue carpet with children Maddox, 20, twins Vivienne and Knox, 13, Shiloh, 15, and Zahara, 16 — decked in a series of vintage and upcycled outfits.

The actress, herself, was dressed in a strapless olive green gown with a sweetheart bodice and complemented it with a pair of gold earrings, bracelets, and an eyecatching lip cuff. “My kids are all mixed with vintage, and in my old Oscars dress. We did all vintage and upcycled my old stuff,” says Jolie.

When interviewed by Entertainment Tonight, Jolie described the diverse cast as a family. “A lot of times as an actress, you’re that individual strong woman, or you have one sister; you don’t often have this family where you really get to know women and see all the different strengths,” explains Jolie.

“Gemma’s grace and elegance and the way she walks through the world. Salma’s motherhood and power, and Lauren’s connection and intelligence. Everybody came as themselves. Maybe there’s something to that, that the characters weren’t as far off [from ourselves].”

Kumail Nanjiani

Opting to represent his culture with his choice of outfit, Pakistani-American comedian and actor, Kumail Nanjiani, showed up to the premiere in an elaborate purple and gold traditional Pakistani sherwani, designed by Umar Sayeed and styled by Jeanne Yang. He even enlisted the help of his mother to find a Pakistani designer who could envision and create the design he had in mind for the premiere.

“I wanted to wear a Sherwani because 1. They look awesome and 2. My costume in the film always reminded me of Sherwanis. And I wanted to use a designer in Pakistan, not just a Pakistani designer in the U.S. So I called my mom, she gave me names of three amazing designers in Pakistan,” says the Kingo actor in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I wanted the colours to be similar to my costume colours, and purple and gold are a beautiful combination. The paisley pattern is very traditional as well.” Nanjiani finished his look with a Patek Philippe watch and Christian Louboutin shoes, though both were hidden underneath his traditional wear.

For ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ actress Gemma Chan, this is not her first rodeo with the MCU. Chan played evil Kree sniper Minn-Erva in ‘Captain Marvel’ (2019) before jumping onto ‘Eternals’, though unrecognisable in the former as she was painted blue the whole time.

“I was not expecting to be asked back so soon. When I spoke to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and he said, “We would love to have you back,” I thought he was just being nice. [Laughs] Like, maybe at some point in the distant future, if at all. But it was a nice surprise,” says Chan in an interview with Entertainment Weekly

Chan graced the blue carpet in a lacey white gown made defined with a lengthy feather cape and accessorised with simple earrings, ear cuffs, and a messy up-do.

On top of the action in ‘Eternals’, fans can expect an epic romance between Chan and Richard Madden’s characters Sersi and Ikaris. “They are immortal soulmates. They’re very different to each other, but opposites attract,” says Chan about their dynamic.

‘Game of Thrones' star Richard Madden also showed up to the premiere looking dapper in his classy velvet tuxedo, complementing Chan’s ensemble as he stood next to her for photos.

When asked how he felt about finally working with longtime friend, Chan, on the project, he had this to say: “We've known each other for over 10 years now, so if you're going to go to work and get up and see someone at 4 a.m. every day, it makes it a lot easier if you like them. Because we've known each other so long, we already have this trust and rapport. We know how to push each other's buttons. We know how to make each other laugh. We wanted to bring out the best in each other, so it makes it just a nice, organic process — rather than meeting someone for the first time and being like, "Hey, you've got to make out now."
