Parasite Was The Best Thing About The Oscars And Here’s How The Internet Reacted

There is a new fan club in town, and it’s called the #bonghive

On February 10, Parasite directed by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho took home four wins at the 92nd Academy Awards, making Oscars history as the first ever film in a foreign language to do so.

Parasite beat other films such as 1917, The Irishman, Joker, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood to bag the biggest prize of best picture for the night. The film also picked the award for best original screenplay and best international picture. Bong himself won best director, against Hollywood contenders Quentin Tarantino, Todd Phillips, Sam Mendes and Martin Scorsese

Bong has long been one of South Korea’s best directors, with acclaimed movies such as The Host (2006), Mother (2009), Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017) under his belt, and this win has propelled him further into the international spotlight.

The four monumental wins for the darkly comic South Korean thriller were certainly well deserving of the Oscars, but the public fell even more in love with Bong Joon-ho thanks to his reactions and hilarious speeches, even leading to the trending hashtag, #bonghive, a spin-off of Beyonce’s #Beyhive.

His winning speech for Best Director

In his winning speech for best director, Bong gave a shout out to his film inspirations Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino while growing up.

“When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart,  which is that, “The most personal is the most creative” he said, quoting from Martin Scorsese.

And to conclude his speech, Bong cracked the audience (and the rest of us!) up when he ended his speech with, “After winning best international feature, I thought I was done for the day and ready to relax,” and concluded with, “I will drink until next morning, thank you.”

In a press conference after the Academy Awards, the director shared about his experience going on stage so many times.

He said, “For Best Picture, it was my fourth time going on stage, so I felt a little awkward, and I wanted other people to have the chance to talk, so I stayed off to the side.”

“For this past month and a half of awards season, I’ve been to so many award ceremonies, and I think I’ve given 20, maybe 30 speeches. Now, at the end [of it], my speech bank ran empty, and it reached the point where I even started talking about alcohol.”

Here are all the best tweets and internet reactions of this historic win:
