What You Missed from Day Two of the 2023 MAMA Awards
BTS’ Jungkook, Jimin and Suga, and Blackpink’s Jisoo all took home individual awards for their music releases this year. Here are all the winners and highlights!
Just like that the 2023 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) has concluded! After a remarkable Day one, with performances from Tomorrow x Together (TXT) and ENHYPEN, expectations were running high for Day two. True to form, Day two was another thrilling affair for artists and fans, as the 2023 MAMA Awards handed out the remaining awards, including the coveted Daesangs (or Grand Prizes).
For the 2023 MAMA Awards, one of the most highly anticipated performances was born from an iconic crossover. Huh Yun-jin of Le Sserafim, Kep1er’s Xiaoting, (G)I-DLE’s Minnie, and popular dancers Bada Lee and Monika collaborated on stage to perform "Goddess Awakened". The 10-minute-long performance comprised a medley of short individual stages and a final group performance of Lim Kim’s "Mago".
The awards show produced some special renditions of viral K-pop tracks from this year, including (G)I-DLE’s "Queencard", and Le Sserafim’s "Eve, Psyche & the Bluebeard’s Wife". Popular third-generation boyband Seventeen also took to the stage to deliver a flawless performance of "God of Music" and "Super", while fourth-generation group Treasure and Treasure T5, a group sub-unit, showcased their powerful tracks "Bona Bona" and "Move", respectively.
When it came down to the announcement of award winners, the recipients of the Daesangs stole the show. Seventeen took home the Album of the Year award with the group’s EP FML, while NewJeans, who couldn’t attend the awards show, bagged two Daesangs. The immensely popular rookie girl group was awarded Song of the Year with "Ditto", and Artist of the Year, just over a year after their debut. The five-piece group made history as the first girl group to receive the Artist of the Year award in 12 years. The last female group to win the prestigious title was Girls’ Generation, who achieved the feat back in 2011. The last Daesang, Worldwide Icon of the Year, was awarded to BTS on Day one of the awards ceremony.
The 2023 MAMA Awards also recognised some of the biggest names in K-pop right now. Blackpink’s Jisoo was granted the title of Best Female Artist and was awarded Best Music Video and Best Dance Performance (Female Solo) for her solo debut number ‘Flower’. BTS’ Jimin achieved the title of Best Male Artist, and Agust D (aka Suga) took home the trophy for Best Rap & Hip-Hop Performance. Jungkook from BTS snagged some MAMA awards as well, with tracks from his newly-released debut album Golden. With "Seven" featuring Latto, Jungkook nabbed the titles of Best Dance Performance (Male Solo) and Best Collaboration.
