Lola Tillyaeva's Perfume House, The Harmonist, Wants to Lead the Drive for Sustainability
Lola Tillyaeva created The Harmonist to find balance through scent. Crafted using sustainably sourced materials — to respect both humans and mother nature — that's how The Harmonist's sophisticated fragrances are born. The newcomer also draws on the principles of Feng Shui, namely, the desire to find strength and balance through connection with our surroundings.
Founded in 2013 by Lola Tillyaeva (who is fondly known as Lola Till), The Harmonist's fundamentals revolve around the 5 natural elements – Wood, Earth, Fire, Water and Metal and is individualised to the wearer based on their element according to their birth date.
The multi-hyphenate Los Angeles-based humanitarian, businesswoman and author is passionate about sustainability and fighting climate change. She is a big advocate for environmental sustainability, and incorporating that into the brand's business model is one of her biggest goals.
From ethically sourced ingredients, to opting for natural essential oils and using vegetal waxes for its candles, The Harmonist's conscious choice extends to every possible touchpoint; they even use recyclable materials which can be found in each aspect of the product and packaging.
The Harmonist represents the perfect union of the craft and saviour-faire of the French, with the modernism and storytelling of Los Angeles. There are a total of thirteen perfumes in the range, all of which echos the traditional Chinese philosophies of Daoism and Feng Shui, two widely practised concepts that help people to empower themselves emotionally and physically.
Lola Till is also committed to sponsoring philanthropic causes, namely, those aimed at developing effective solutions to clean water sources, increasing community awareness about water conservation, and developing training materials for education about sanitation and hygiene.
"The Harmonist launched an environmental project emulating the water element called “The Droplet”, designed to highlight the urgency of issues relating to global warming, water scarcity and conservation," says Lola Till. "The Droplet is an art installation designed in the form of a falling water drop which travels the world for conferences, performances and awareness to raise events spotlighting water issue of global concern."
Another initiative by Lola Till is the You Are Not Alone Foundation, which supports vulnerable children in Uzbekistan by providing them with education, medical care and psychological support.
The brand's two newly launched fragrances, Moon Glory and Sun Force, were nominated as finalists in the 2021 US Fragrance Foundation Awards under its most notable categories: Namely, “Fragrance of the Year, Women’s Luxury” for Moon Glory, and “Fragrance of the Year, Men’s Luxury” for Sun Force. That's not to mention the fact that The Harmonist is also the first brand to be shortlisted under both categories in the same year.
Despite being a relatively new player in the highly competitive field, The Harmonist’s unique proposition and ingenuity are what sets it apart from the rest.
Guillaume Flavigny — the well-known nose behind numerous favourites from brands such as Commodity, Elizabeth Arden and Giorgio Armani — is Moon Glory and Sun Force’s scent designer. To create the two perfumes, he has scoured the world for precious ingredients to formulate these olfactory delights.
Says Lola Till: “Being recognised by the Fragrance Foundation is an incredible honour. Our team is passionate about creating unique, memorable scents that captivate the wearer and reflect the planet’s beauty and the wonders of nature."
What's more, the brand will also launch a new collection of scents this Fall. We, for one, cannot wait to see what that entails.
