How to Recreate Chanel’s Subtle Smokey Eye Makeup Look

As seen on Chanel’s Haute Couture models last week, replicate the subtle dark-eyed look that was paraded alongside the ‘30s-inspired collection.

Virginie Viard’s textural explosion at Chanel’s Haute Couture show was one to remember; an inventive Fall/Winter experiment of artistic liberties and traditional House codes. Complementing the looks on the runway was a subtle smokey eye makeup look. Below are some tips to recreate the strong look on yourself.

First things first: The skin. It’s imperative to start with a clean, neutral base; this is so the eyes will stand out more. The finish we’re aiming for with this look is glowy, so use water-based creams and serums to get that natural dewiness from within. Forgo heavy bronzers and ultra-shimmery highlighters, instead use lighter products to gently sculpt out the high and low points of your face for some definition.

Next, the eyes and brows. For the full effect, use a cool-toned ash shadow (or a rich charcoal shade if your skin tone is darker) around the eyes, mainly lining the pigment close to the natural shape of your eyes. Then use a small, fluffy brush to lightly blend the shadow outwards, carefully shaping the colour on your eyelid upwards to get a subtle lifting effect. If this sounds too intense for your liking, try a light dove-grey shadow on your eyelid instead.

Keep the brows sprightly but simple – the idea is to have them add life to your look without interfering with the eye makeup too much. And don’t forget to apply generous coats of mascara. Aim for thick, long lashes that aren’t clumpy – seeing the definition of each individual lash is in these days (thanks Douyin!).

The cheeks are the brightest touch of colour in this look. Opt for a natural coral tone to bring out the rosiness on the apples of your cheeks. Again, use a light hand for an understated result.

For the lips, the Chanel models had on a nice nude tone. For the perfect balance on the face, go for a neutral nude shade that matches your natural lip colour. A little shimmer goes a long way, and a slightly glossy lippie will offset any heaviness from the eyes.
