Skin first and forever. We round up the year's best new concealers that battle blemishes and eliminate under eye darkness.

This year’s seen the launch of a host of new concealers upping the ante where coverage and care are concerned. Seeing as we’re in constant need of one that does everything well and switching allegiances as soon as a better one comes around, we thought you’d like a round up of our favourites.

Laura Mercier Candleglow Concealer and Highlighter, $55

The latest in Flawless Face accoutrements from Laura Mercier is a lightweight, light-reflective and all-around light-loving highlighter. It functions less as high-coverage concealer, and more as a bouncy highlighter that works best under the eyes, in the shadowy corners, around the nose and as natural shaping around the lips. The little sponge-tip applicator works well for these purposes: it’s small enough to fit into the nooks and crannies to apply and blend.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer, $42

Coverage comes high in the flow-off-the-tongue concealer favourite from IT Cosmetics. The Sephora-exclusive brand’s anti-aging concealer is a best-seller for good reason: it treats as it hides. Hyaluronic acid, peptides and antioxidants work to plump up and brighten the under eyes while giving it comfortable and long-wearing full coverage. A word to the wise though: the tube is small for a reason. A tiny squeeze of product onto the fingertips will do the trick.

La Mer Skin Colour Concealer, $120

Here comes a contender for the vaunted Clé de Peau for the title of ultra luxurious concealer. La Mer takes from its skincare its potent Miracle Broth technology to infuse the product with antioxidants, youth-boosting benefits and weightless coverage. Because it’s so treatment-backed, the product texture is smooth, creamy and blends right into skin.

Guerlain Multi-Perfecting Concealer, $62

Guerlain very subtly released a new concealer this year that crept into my makeup kit and heart. The Multi-Perfecting Concealer is a 2-in-1 product that simultaneously covers and treats. It wears best under the eyes as all the shades lean slightly peachy – which in colour-correcting terms is perfect for countering the ashy greys. The formula also has the skincare benefit of hydrating the delicate skin in the under eye area and reducing puffiness. Double score.

Multi-Purpose

Tom Ford Waterproof Foundation Concealer, $128

Out of all the luxurious treats from Tom Ford’s 2016 Face Focus collection, we’re most in love with the practical benefits of the Waterproof Foundation Concealer. That’s because: 1. it’s waterproof, which means persistent, sweat-resistant wear that’s good for sunny days; 2. it’s both foundation and concealer. As a concealer, a small drop works beautifully for spot concealing – simply tap into problem spots or areas and feather out the edges. As a foundation, the extreme coverage is easier to wear when sheered out and mixed into some moisturiser.

Bobbi Brown Retouching Face Pencil, $55

This one’s for the oily-skinned! Bobbi’s Retouching Face Pencil is a creamy-textured and matte-finishing concealer that works best on oilier or well-moisturised skins. The pencil blends so easily it’s almost like drawing an instant Photoshop fix over your face. If your skin is clear enough and peppered only slightly with blemishes or dark areas, we recommend just using this (in a shade that matches your skin exactly) strategically on the problem spots and powdering down to get a long-lasting finish.
