Matte nude brown lipstick shades have been a huge trend for a while now, especially since the launch of Kylie Jenner's lip kits. The brown lip, however, started as a trend back in the '90s. Jennifer Aniston revealed that her character, Rachel Green, on the popular American television sitcom 'Friends' often wore a brick brown shade called 'Paramount' from M.A.C cosmetics and just about every '90s star, from Drew Barrymore to Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears also sported the look back in the day.

The brown lip is seeing a serious revival as influencers, models and celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Camila Coelho and Priyanka Chopra have been spotted in these brown toned lipsticks. Bonus? They happen to be perfect for everyday wear.

Vampy Lips

Dark, burgundy lips that almost bordered black were not uncommon in the '90s. The darker shades complimented the grunge look that was a popular aesthetic at the time. It was also popular with iconic '90s figures like Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder, and Gwen Stefani. Betsey Johnson, a fashion designer synonymous with the '90s fashion scene was also known for her penchant for dark lips on the runway.

Vanessa Hudgens was seen wearing this dark, almost black lipstick shade while attending the LA premiere and screening of Johnathan Larson's 'Tick, tick... BOOM!'. Though, dark, vampy lips are more versatile than you think: They're an easy way to add a little flair to that evening look. Try it during the day paired with a floral dress, black choker, and boots or mary-janes to create a cool, casual grunge look.

Glitter

Roll-on and gel body glitter, frosted lips with a frosted eyeshadow, glitter eyeshadows, shimmery powders dusted onto cheekbones or the décolleté... The '90s were all about the sparkle. It was not uncommon to find a tube of glittery gloss as a freebie when purchasing your favourite teen magazine. Pop icons like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez were just a few of the big celebrities that wore the look back in the day, in addition to supermodel Naomi Campbell — who wore glitter makeup down the runway — and Christina Aguilera, who was often spotted with glitter around the corners of her eyes.

The fun part about glitter in the '90s is that it didn't have to be just for an ultra-posh, formal event. Glitter was worn all the time, to school dances, parties, the beach or even just to hang out at the mall. This is one look that you don't need to reserve for a special occasion to try.

Smudged Eyeliner

The smudged liner has evolved into the glamorous smokey eye of this era, with many make-up brands creating palettes and shadow sticks just to achieve the look. The '90s smudged look, however, popularised by musicians like Avril Lavigne, shows us that makeup does not have to be perfectly symmetrical all the time.

This is one statement eye look that can take you from day to night. Keep it simple with a dab of gloss, or pair it with a vampy or brown lip for an evening look. For something a little more unique, try the smudged liner with a frosted lip, or brighter lip colour for a contemporary twist.

Frosted Lips

Before the lip glosses of the early '00s, there was the frosted lip. Frosted lipstick can be characterised as a lip colour that has a light-reflecting, pearlescent shimmer to it, giving the lips a slightly metallic sheen. Back in the '90s, the trend featured pink and tan hues that were worn by celebrities like Kate Moss and Paris Hilton.

In recent times, the frosted lip has been updated to include bronzey shades to create an edgier, more subtle look, adding just the right amount of drama without the glare of a shiny, glitter gloss.

Pastel Lids

A dark lip with ultra-light, pastel eyeshadow swept all over the lid was a go-to look for many in the '90s. If you aren't fond of the chalky-ness of the '90s' version, add a contrasting winged liner to give the look a little edge. If you'd like to keep it purely retro, a sweep of mascara is all you need to not overpower the airy shades.
