How to Recreate the Dolly-Lash Look
Popular among the Douyin crowd, the dolly-lash look is a trend we’ve been loving. Here, we show you how to ace it on your own.
Lately, we’ve noticed that stars like Taeyeon and our September cover girl (G)I-DLE's Minnie have been rocking the dreamiest eye-makeup. The key point of those makeup looks? Doll-like eyelashes. Romantic and dreamy, L’Officiel Singapore gives you a step-by-step guide on how to recreate these “fairy lashes” (as they are known on Douyin!) on yourself.
The Prep
After completing your eyeshadow and eyeliner details, reach for your trustiest lash curler. We’ve been loving mini or precision curlers to really get in there. Carefully curl all your lashes, taking the time to ensure every lash is upturned. We recommend curling once at the roots of your lashes, then working progressively upwards towards the ends of your lashes, squeezing two to three more times along the way. As the final step of prep, curl once more at the base of your lashes to really push the hairs up.
The Length
Then, grab your favourite lengthening mascara in black and apply a generous coat or two. This just sets your natural lashes up to match the falsies coming in later. After each coat, use a pair of eyelash tweezers to carefully “clump” a few lashes together. You’re creating small groups of lashes this way, to give the illusion of spikes of lashes that add to the dolly effect. Don’t forget your bottom lashes as well! If you want a more natural rendition of the fairy-lash look, you can choose to stop here.
The Falsies
If you’re a go-hard or go-home kind of girl, though, we’re going to add some drama with some falsies. For the best results, we suggest buying for falsies sold individually. Be on the lookout for sets that have variations in length.
On your lash palette, dab a couple of drops of lash glue, in preparation for the application process. Now, the magic can begin. Starting with the longest lashes, work inwards from the outer corners of your eyes. Dab the lash in the glue and place it on your lash line, towards the tail ends of your eyes (where your natural lashes also look the longest). Then, repeat this step with the longest lashes three more times along your upper lash line, keeping in mind to leave some room between each long lash for the medium-length lashes that’ll come in later on.
Once you’re happy with the application, you can repeat the process with one or two medium-length lashes in between each long one. The idea is to keep the long lashes as the focal point of the look – the medium (or short ones, if you prefer) are to add volume and keep the look somewhat natural. The “spikes” we created earlier should also help with this!
The Finish
Make sure all the lashes are securely in place by softly pushing them upwards. If they come loose, apply slightly more lash glue and hold for a few more seconds before releasing. At this point, your dolly lashes should be ready to go as they are.
But for that extra oomph, you can add a touch of glitter in the centre of the little pocket of fat under your eyes or in the inner corners of your eyes. A sparkly pearl or champagne shadow will enhance the fairy feel of the lashes. And now you’re ready to take the world by storm with your new doll-lash look!
