12 Of The Biggest Celebrity Hair Transformations Of 2020 So Far
Just like us regular folks, celebrities have spent the past few months self-isolating at home, and it seems that they too have been subject to the restlessness and boredom that weeks of sheltering in place tends to induce. At least, if the major hair transformations we’ve seen on their social media feeds are any indication.
It can be hard to keep track of the changes in cuts and colours that stars cycle through under so-called normal circumstances. But with beauty salons previously deemed non-essential services and hence shuttered during lockdown, many A-listers took matters into their own hands (quite literally) and gave themselves (and their partners) some pretty dramatic makeovers. Which, let’s be honest, a lot of us have done or been tempted to do as well.
From natural hair to neon ‘dos, bangs to buzzcuts, and striking to surprising, we’ve rounded up 12 of the boldest chop and changes thus far, courtesy of Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion, Cody Simpson and more.
Dua Lipa
It’s no secret that Dua Lipa is a style chameleon who enjoys experimenting with her wardrobe, but quarantine has shown that the pop star isn’t afraid to switch it up when it comes to her hair, either. A few weeks after she debuted a new feathered fringe — an accidental result of bleach breakage — the “Physical” singer had her boyfriend Anwar Hadid dye her locks baby pink, then a tangerine shade she dubbed “orangina quarantina”, and then strawberry pink and cherry red. Last we saw on Instagram, Lipa is back to brunette, but who knows how long that will last!
Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner has been playing with her hair for years thanks to wigs and extensions, and self-isolation notwithstanding, recent weeks have proved no exception. The almost billionaire has gone from a sleek black mane to caramel blonde waves to bleached platinum, pastel pink, and chocolate brown faster than you can say “Keeping up with the Kardashians”.
Megan Thee Stallion
The “Savage” rapper laid bare her natural curls on Instagram back in April, but that isn’t the only style Megan Thee Stallion has delighted fans with on social media. The certified #HotGirl flaunted mermaid-esque rainbow hair in June to commemorate Pride Month, followed in quick succession by a blunt platinum bob, blue-streaked space buns, and glossy violet locks twisted into a beehive.
Miley Cyrus
Like father, like daughter? Besides hosting her own star-studded talk show, Bright Minded, on IGTV (at home, don’t worry), Miley Cyrus kept us riveted by inaugurating a new look — a “pixie mullet”. Treading in Billy Ray’s footsteps whilst staying true to her IDGAF attitude, the singer-songwriter entrusted her mum Tish with the haircut, guided via FaceTime by her stylist Sally Hershberger. Cyrus has since explained that the decision was actually part of the preparations for her new single, “Midnight Sky” on August 14.
Cardi B
Cardi B already let us in on the secret to soft, shiny, and healthy tresses like hers — a nourishing cocktail incorporating avocado, argan oil, mayonnaise, raw eggs, honey and more. But the rapper has also graced us with several major lewks over the past months, donning an eye-catching variety of wigs in different shades and styles, including a sleek ponytail in eggplant purple, a pastel pink bow bun, a Marilyn Monroe-esque blonde and pink bob, a fiery red pixie cut, and of course, that unforgettable Louis Vuitton Monogram ponytail.
Emily Ratajkowski
Do blondes have more fun? You’d have to ask Emily Ratajkowski, who transformed herself into a blonde bombshell by lightening her chestnut waves to a warm honey hue.
Cody Simpson
Makeovers are fun and all that, but even better when they’re for a good cause. As with Cody Simpson, who recently shaved off his famously floppy hair in favour of a buzzcut, with a little help from Miley Cyrus, in order to benefit 4ocean, a charity working to end the ocean plastic crisis. “Clean cuts for clean oceans I say,” wrote Simpson.
Bella Hadid
If you’ve contemplated getting bangs during lockdown, you weren’t the only one. Bella Hadid took to Instagram to share the results of her DIY haircut — she snipped wispy bangs for herself — and confirming what we already know, she’s clearly a woman of many talents.
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart is a trailblazer in many ways, and that applies to her hair, too. The actor had the foresight to get a professional dye job done in March before the official lockdown in the U.S., and inadvertently started a whole new trend — orange hair. Or “cosmic rust”, as her longtime stylist CJ Romero dubbed it. Whatever you want to call that eye-popping hue, you’re probably going to see a lot more of it on social media.
Ariana Grande
It’s not often you see Ariana Grande sans her signature high ponytail, but in self-isolation, the “thank u, next” songstress took the time off to let her hair down — literally. Grande gave us not one, but two shots of her natural curls, and we can’t get enough of the look. Neither can her family, friends, and fans. Her mother commented on the photo with “Your natural hair/curls is a world of its own… a magnificent beauty you are inside and out/ made up or natural”, while fellow Disney alum Dove Cameron said, “hair!! thriving!!”.
Katy Perry
Katy Perry isn’t one to shy away from bright and bold beauty looks, and her latest makeover is bang on brand — neon orange hair. “Orange you glad TODAY’S THE DAY”, the “Smile” singer wrote in the caption of her cheerful post, referencing her performance at the Tomorrowland Around the World digital festival. It’s likely a wig, given her pregnancy, but here’s hoping she’ll keep the vivid colour post-partum.
Armie Hammer
Speaking of hair transformations, we can’t not talk about Armie Hammer. The Call Me By Your Name star swapped his usual shiny coif and well-groomed beard for a questionable mohawk and handlebar moustache, and we’re not sure what to think. And if that wasn’t shocking enough, he announced this change with a post on Instagram in which he was seen wearing… a fringed crop top and patterned swimming trunks. Just a phase? Hopefully.
