Harry Styles Makes His Return To The Big Screen In Olivia Wilde's 'Don't Worry Darling'
We’ve had our hopes dashed once or twice before about Harry Styles’ next foray into acting, but this time around, the rumours are finally true. Three years after his well-received debut in Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk, the ‘Watermelon Sugar’ singer is coming back to the big screen, starring alongside Florence Pugh in the upcoming psychological thriller, Don’t Worry Darling.
Styles replaces Shia LaBeouf (the veteran actor had to leave the project due to a scheduling conflict) as the lead, joining a high-profile cast that includes Chris Pine and Dakota Johnson. Don’t Worry Darling will be helmed by Olivia Wilde, marking her sophomore outing as a director following the critically-acclaimed, coming-of-age drama Booksmart.
Details on the movie are thin on the ground at present, although we do know that it is set in 1950s America, and revolves around an unhappy housewife (Florence Pugh’s character) that “slowly begins to question her own sanity when she starts to notice strange occurrences in her small, utopian community in the California desert”. Styles takes on the role of her “picture perfect” husband, who “loves her dearly, but is hiding a dark secret from her”. Along the lines of Stepford Wives, perhaps?
Dakota Johnson, meanwhile, will appear as Pugh’s neighbour, who becomes paranoid and warns her that not everything is as it seems. And Chris Pine will play a cult leader who runs a worksite where all the town’s men are employed.
Originally penned by Carey and Shane Van Dyke, the film’s script has undergone a partial rewrite by Katie Silberman (she worked on Booksmart with Wilde), with the enterprise backed by New Line Cinemas and Catherine Hardwicke (of Thirteen and Twilight fame) as executive producer.
As of now, production is set to begin in the fall, meaning that the film could be ready in either late 2021 or early 2022. Here’s hoping it’s sooner rather than later.
